- LD50: The dose that has been determined to be lethal to 50% of the test population.
- The LD50 of VX nerve gas is 0.0154 mg/kg, as listed for rabbits.
- The human dermal LD50 (Lethal Dose) is estimated to be as low as 0.04 mg/kg.
- VX is extremely lethal and the smallest amount can lead to death.
- VX is considered to be the most toxic of the nerve agents developed for chemical warfare. Course, symptoms, and relative toxicity can vary considerably by exposure route and dose. The effects of exposure by inhalation usually occur within minutes. Miosis, rhinorrhea, and airway constriction are initially seen at low to moderate concentrations. Larger doses of VX result in loss of consciousness, seizures, cessation of cardiac and respiratory activity and death in the absence of medical treatment.
- Recently, on February 13, Kim Jong Nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, died shortly after two women put VX Nerve Gas on his face while he was checking in for a flight.
- Lethal Dose = Mass of individual x LD50
